Ambystome de Zempoala

Groupe 13 de Highton. Correspond au type de l’ancien genre Rhyacosiredon Dunn, 1928. Décrit de Manantial de los Axolotes, Serrania de las Cruces, Vallée de Mexico (Distrito Federal) (in Thireau, 1986). Inclut Rhyacosiredon zempoalaensis Taylor & Smith, 1945 = Ambystoma zempoalaense, des Lagunas de Zempoala, Morelos. Corps court, mais plus allongé que A. rivulare, auquel il ressemble, museau abruptement tronqué, oeil en position dorsolatérale, queue du mâle plus longue que celle de la femelle et cloaque renflé chez le mâle au moment de la reproduction. Même coloration générale que celle d'A. rivulare (taches et réticulations noirâtres sur fond plus clair).

Populations isolées dans de petits ruisseaux en forêts de pins, mixtes pins/chênes et de prairies d’altitude entre 2 700 et 3 200 m dans la zone centrale du Plateau mexicain autour de la ville de Mexico, à l’ouest et au sud de la Vallée de Mexico, nord de l’Etat de Morelos, centre de l’Etat de Mexico et sud du Distrito Federal. EN. Connu de trois parcs nationaux : Lagunas de Zempoala, zone fortement dégradée d’où cette forme a apparemment disparu, Mts Ajusco et Desierto de Los Leones. Menacé par la dégradation des forêts autour de Mexico. Anciennement assez commune, cette espèce se métamorphose, mais des adultes ont été trouvés toute l’année dans l’eau, avec les larves.

Highton’s group 13. It corresponds to the former genus Rhyacosiredon Dunn, 1928. Described from Manantial de los Axolotes, Serrania de las Cruces, Mexico Valley (Distrito Federal). Includes Rhyacosiredon zempoalaensis Taylor & Smith, 1945 and Ambystoma zempoalaense Brandon, 1989 des Lagunas de Zempoala, Morelos. Metamorphosis occurs. Adults and larvae have been found all year long in water.

Habitat & Range: Remote populations in small streams in pine forests, oak-pine mixed forests and high mountain grassland between 2,700 and 3,200 m in the central zone of the Mexican Altiplano around the city of Mexico, west and south of the Mexico Valley, north of the Morelos State, central zone of the Mexico State and south of the Distrito Federal. 1,446 km2.

Conservation: Endangered. Known to be in three national parks: Lagunas de Zempoala (in some very altered zones where this species may have disappeared), Mts Ajusco and Desierto de Los Leones. Threatened by forest degradation around Mexico City. Formerly quite abundant.

Physical Description: Body length is short, but longer than A. rivulare which it resembles. Snout abruptly truncated, eyes positioned dorsolaterally, male tail length longer than female tail length. A swollen cloaca can be seen in males during reproduction. Same general coloration as A. rivulare (black spots and reticulations on a more pale background).
