This species is found across a wide area of the central mountains of Papua New Guinea, and across the border at Okbap and Langda in Papua, Indonesia. It has recently also been recorded from Mount Simpson, in Milne Bay Province, greatly extending the range of the species eastward. It occurs from 1,000-2,500m asl.
Habitat and Ecology
This species inhabits torrential streams in montane rainforest. It presumably breeds in these streams.
This is an extremely abundant species.
No threats are known. Because of its abundance, it is unlikely to be at risk.
Further documentation of its distribution is needed. Given declines of torrent-dwelling hylids in Australia, monitoring programmes should be initiated. Its range includes Crater Wildlife Management Area.
This form is probably a complex of more than one species (R.W. Zweifel pers. comm.).
