This species is known from a small area of the eastern Star Mountains in the vicinity of the type locality (Telefomin, West Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea), and from an area 30km to the west. It has been recorded at about 1,750m asl. Although it is probably more widely distributed, no data are available to support this view at this stage.

Its population status is unknown.
