Habitat and Ecology
It is almost entirely aquatic, and is found in lakes, ponds and other waterbodies in Cerrado and Caatinga savannah, and is often found floating at the surface of the water. It breeds in water. It is not known whether or not it adapts well to anthropogenic disturbance.
It is a common species.
Expanding agriculture is impacting its populations, overgrazing by domestic livestock, infrastructure development (for expanding human settlements, and dams), and water pollution from agriculture are all threats.
It occurs in some protected areas.
This species was placed in the synonymy of Pseudis paradoxa by Gallardo (1961), but was re-validated by Caramaschi and Cruz (1998).
