Range Description

This species occurs in northeastern Argentina, central Paraguay, and Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. It is found at approximately 80-300m asl.

Habitat and Ecology

It occurs in grasslands, wet Chaco, and wetlands (Pantanal). It reproduces in temporary and permanent pools (including agricultural pools).


It is abundant and the population is stable.

Major Threats

It is not threatened currently, however, it is potentially threatened in the future by habitat destruction and pollution caused by agricultural activities.

Conservation Actions

It occurs in protected areas.

Taxonomic Notes

C├ęspedez (2000) separated the taxon formerly known as Rhinella pygmaea into two species: R. pygmaea of coastal Brazil and R. bergi in the interior of the continent.
