These medium-sized frogs are restricted to the southern region of South America. Formerly a subfamily of Ceratophryidae, it is now restricted to these genera. Much is still unknown about the natural history of these species.

Notable Family Characteristics

  • Medium-sized frog, up to about 60 mm SVL
  • Axillary amplexus
  • At least two types of tadpoles are known from one species Atelognathus patagonicus: an aquatic type living at the shallow edges of water bodies which have skin folds presumably to aid in cutaneous respiration and a littoral type, which lives at deeper depths lacking skin folds (Cuello et al 2006)
  • Known from high elevations, especially Chaltenobatrachus grandisonae most often found from 500 to 830 meters above sea level (Basso et al. 2011).
  • Distribution limited to South America, southern Chile through southwestern Argentina
