This species occurs widely in northern Colombia (including in the Magdalena River basin) and in northern and western Venezuela (including around Lake Maracaibo). In both countries it is also found in the Llanos ecosystem east of the Andes, in Barinas and Apure states in Venezuela, and in Arauca and Casanare states in Colombia. It occurs below 500m asl.
Habitat and Ecology
It is a nocturnal species of low altitude open environments of lowlands, including flooded grasslands, degraded areas with low vegetation, and shallow standing water. It breeds in standing water and swamps.
It is a very common species.
It is a very adaptable species, which is not facing any known threats.
It occurs in some protected areas.
